Blog Entry: Im posting this blog after finding out about pinochets death. Pinochet died in the Santiago Military Hospital after he suffered a massive heart attack a week ago. Seeing on tv thousands of Chileans dancing with joy in the streets of the Santiago, and others mourning outside the military hospital. i find this strange I know alot of chileans that are sad about this not because they are mourning his death but because he deserved to die in jail. General Augusto Pinochet died without standing trial. But justice caught up with him in every other sense. "Pinochet precedent" has made the world a smaller place for the perpetrators of the worst atrocities. For years after Pinochet had relinquished absolute power, he still cast a long shadow over Chile. Despite the desires of a majority of Chileans, he was shielded from prosecution for thousands of killings and "disappearances," by parliamentary immunity and an amnesty that the military had granted itself. Under his regime more than 3,000 people died, and more than 20,000 people were tortured in secret detention centres. Knowing what my family have been through and learning from there experience we have grown to become better people because of it. But me personally, I think I'll just quietly reflect on what happened and always remember to respect the fact we are all human beings and deserve to have our own thoughts and opinions yet NO ONE! has the right to decide who lives or dies. im very thankful that i still have my family. unlike some chilians that had there whole family's taken away from them. and im also thankful to the British who accepted my family in to there culture. I wouldn't be hear right now if it wasn't for there generosity.
